Last weekend I was meeting with a family friend to review their health insurance and provide my input on their current policy.
It started off as a typical review and their policy looked pretty normal. Then I got to the maternity coverage section and saw that it was covered and that they were paying a significant portion of their premium to have the maternity coverage.
I leaned over and kind of whispered to (I'll call him Frank for privacy reasons) Frank with a slight chuckle, hey are you planning on having more kids? Frank had a very peculiar look on his face and said no, why do you ask. I said, well Frank you have it covered here and are paying about $2000 dollars a year for it. At that point Frank's peculiar look changed immediately.
You see, in actuality this wasn't very funny at all. Frank and his wife are both over 60yrs old and their kids are grown with families of their own. Plus Frank didn't find it very funny that he had been paying for coverage for the last 20yrs unnecessarily.
20yrs at $2000 per year is $40,000 that should have been in Frank's pocket that wasn't.
So next time you see a commercial or are tempted to buy insurance from a 1-800 number I strongly recommend you reconsider. Life changes over the years and so does your insurance needs. A 1-800 number is not going to call you and remind what needs to be updated and changed in your insurance program, but a good agent will.
I meet with all of my clients regularly and definitely after life events. There is value in having an expert walk you through your insurance program every step of the way. If you want to meet with an expert please call or e-mail me.
